Sparano + Mooney Architecture in THE PLAN no.122

One of Sparano + Mooney Architecture’s favorite international architectural publications, The Plan based out of Bologna, Italy did an in-depth feature of our studio’s design process in their most recent edition published this week. Written by architecture and design critic, Michael Webb (Architect’s Houses, Moving Around: A Lifetime of Wandering, and many others), the article titled “Interpreting the Context to Create Striking Architecture” explores the studio’s interest in design, process, site-specificity, and the unique context of the American West.

SMA Designed Saint Joseph the Worker Church One of Top Ten Buildings in Utah

We were delighted to start the New Year (and decade!) with one of our favorite projects, St. Joseph the Worker Church in West Jordan being named one of the Ten Best Buildings in the State of Utah by local architect David Sheer in the Salt Lake Tribune.

Construction Update: New Mountain Architecture

With an anticipated occupancy in the early fall; all exterior materials are nearing completion and the focus is shifting to interior finishes. We are very pleased with how the exterior wood cladding is coming together on site and the relationship it has to the textural boards from concrete. The interior cabinetry is currently in production and we look forward to seeing the relationship the refined white oak interiors will have in contrast to the rough sawn cedar clad exterior. Next steps include the final finish layer of landscaping to bring the site back to its natural state and reinforce the home's relationship to this beautiful setting.

Announcing Design Week 2017 and a Sparano + Mooney Architecture Exhibition!

Now in its seventh year, the 2017 edition of Design Week is opening from October 16th-21st and we can’t wait to take part in this city-wide cultural showcase! As Salt Lake City architects deeply committed to producing, experiencing and inspiring great design, we are excited to check out the creative smorgasbord that this artistic city has to offer during what is sure to be a stellar event. And, we hope to welcome you to our studio on Monday, October 16th from 5:00-6:30pm, for an exhibition of work by University of Utah School of Architecture students, taught by our own Anne Mooney!

Construction Updates from the Wabi-Sabi House

We are excited to report that construction is well underway on the Wabi-Sabi House in Emigration Canyon, Utah! Our Salt Lake City architects and designers have been hard at work in collaboration with our wonderful and inspirational clients, as well as our dedicated team of consultants – including Living Home Construction and Structural Design Studio – to make the dream of a tranquil, mountain modern home a reality.

Exhibition Highlight: Imagining UMOCA

We are pleased to announce the opening of an exciting new exhibition titled Imagining UMOCA, which will be on display at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art from January 24 - April 15, 2017.

Led by our own Anne Mooney in the Senior Design Studio course at the University of Utah's School of Architecture, students imagined possibilities for expanding the museum to serve its diverse and growing audience. They began by researching contemporary artists, and then developed their analyses into 3-dimensional designs for one of three downtown sites, attempting to capture the essence of the artist they selected in their proposals. These final concepts by six students will be exhibited in the museum's Ed Space Gallery. The concepts meet UMOCA's programmatic and functional requirements, while also creating a spatial experience that unfolds gradually for the visitor and engages both body and mind.
