LAX FORMER AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL TOWER

The former air traffic control tower at Los Angeles International Airport was converted to executive offices for the Airport Commissioners. Sparano + Mooney Architecture provided architectural services for this $3.6M project, including a 13-story addition and renovation with upgrades to the tower to meet current ADA, fire and seismic building standards, as well as an enclosed stair tower addition incorporated to provide a second means of egress. The design was developed as a contemporary camouflaged addition, seamlessly blending in with the form of the existing tower. The tower therefore continues to serve as an important modernist architectural landmark to Los Angeles-area residents and the millions of passengers travelling through LAX each year.
