M. K. COX PERFORMING ARTS CENTER FEASIBILITY STUDY

Utah Tech University approached Sparano + Mooney Architecture to undertake a facility assessment and feasibility study, develop conceptual designs and generate recommendations for renovation and/or expansion to the 1190-seat Cox auditorium on the rapidly-developing higher-education campus. Our goal was to develop a feasible concept for renovation and/or expansion of the venue that would elevate the experience of it for the next 50 years, and to generate a road map for renovation that would create a more accessible, accommodating and engaging venue experience for the University and broader community.

We developed a preliminary estimate of probable cost for the architectural renovation and additions to the Cox PAC, including the updated theater equipment and audio/visual systems. The feasibility report outlined a case for a meaningful facility renovation, and included: an executive summary; facility assessment and existing-conditions narrative; concept sketches and narratives for the auditorium and support spaces; site plan and space list; and renderings. Our team completed an in-depth assessment of the venue, engaged locally with key stakeholders (including the Utah Tech Symphonic Band, Southwest Symphony, Heritage Choir and UT LIVE/Celebrity Concert Series), developed an achievable renovation/expansion concept plan that corresponded to the University’s goals and validated and refined a working budget.

Sparano + Mooney Architecture was then retained to complete the renovation and addition to the venue, which is currently under construction and now officially named the America First Performing Arts Center. It will open to the public in April 2026.
